Asset protection is front of mind when you’re running pressurised fluid systems, be it in mining, oil & gas, manufacturing, agriculture, or the construction industry. From running entire fleets of mobile mining equipment to stationary machining tools like CNC lathes, these fluid systems can be highly precise – and expensive to repair or replace if things go wrong.

Fluid contamination control in high-value heavy equipment and machinery is a widely recognised problem, with ~70% plus fluid contamination driven by ferrous materials – increasing to ~90% upon a component failure. Even at the minute level, ferrous contamination in hydraulics and pressurised fluid systems is problematic and whilst there are multiple causes, each with varying levels of probability and impact, the end result is the same – damage, downtime, and cost.

Filtration using media filters has always been an important component of best practices in fluid contamination control. Whilst effective there are some inherent limitations of media filtration:

They are specifically designed to only filter particles above a certain design size (usually between 3 and 5 microns) with smaller particles passing through the filter and remaining in the system;
The holding capacity of these filters is limited, resulting in filters needing to be changed regularly;
When large quantities of contamination are introduced into the circuit (e.g. component failures), media filters reach capacity and enter bypass mode leaving your system unprotected from that point.

Until now, we’ve become accustomed to “living with it” or operating in an environment where certain tolerance levels are just accepted.
